Northstar Ventures, an early stage VC specialising in tech businesses (www.northstarventures.co.uk ), will be available on 18 th April at MSP's Bright Building to talk about your business and to advise on plans for fundraising. Northstar manages around £120m of investment funds and is actively investing from the North-East Innovation fund.
Companies interested in an informal chat about their plans and where they are in their journey can come and spend time with investment managers from Northstar. Either Richard Charnley or Alex Bunchan will be available.
As an Investment Manager at Northstar, Rick is involved in making and managing investments into early stage and digital businesses. He also works with a portfolio of existing investee companies.
Rick joined our team from Entrust, where he was personally responsible for the day-to-day management of a loan portfolio in excess of £12m. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics from Newcastle University and is a Chartered Management Accountant.
Rick regularly mentors aspiring entrepreneurs, through his involvement in programmes such as Ignite and SparkTank (part of Northumbria University's Msc in Entrepreneurship). He was also seconded to the Sirius Programme in 2015, to help deliver the North East programme. Sirius is run by UK Trade and Investment to help international graduates with high growth business ideas set up in the UK. Rick was responsible for mentoring the teams whilst challenging them on their strategy and delivering weekly workshops on various start-up topics.
Rick is interested in the future of the workforce and the impact of machine learning on workplace developments.
As an Investment Director, Alex makes and manages investments into a wide range of technology businesses and oversees our activities in the health-tech and green-tech sectors. He is an observer on the board of several companies and is a Non-Exec Director at Femeda, a company which produces medical devices.
Alex has been interested in the life-sciences industry since completing a PhD in Microbiology/ Biotechnology at the University of Kent. He went on to hold a number of senior commercial roles in biotechnology companies, including Compugen, SDI Europe and EnSys Europe. Prior to this, Alex worked as a Stockbroker in London.
Alex is also responsible for Northstar's partnership with Ignite, one of Europe's leading angel-led accelerator programmes. As part of this, Alex works as a mentor and advisor to start-up companies taking part. He also sits on the Newcastle University Equity Committee, supporting with its commercialisation activities.
Outside of Northstar, Alex is a Trustee for North East charity The Lit and Phil - the largest independent library outside of London.
