Office Hours with Northstar Ventures

Northstar Ventures, an early stage VC specialising in tech businesses (, will be available at MSP's Bright Building to talk about your business and to advise on plans for fundraising. Northstar manages around £120m of investment funds and is actively investing from the North-East Innovation fund.

Companies interested in an informal chat about their plans and where they are in their journey can come and spend time with investment managers from Northstar. Either Richard Charnley or Caitlin May will be available.

Richard Charnley

As an Investment Manager at Northstar, Rick is involved in making and managing investments into early stage and digital businesses. He also works with a portfolio of existing investee companies and has led or been involved in over 50 transactions.

Rick joined Northstar in 2012 after training as a Chartered Management Accountant and working for a specialist debt fund. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics from Newcastle University.

Rick joined the team from Entrust, where he was personally responsible for the day-to-day management of a loan portfolio in excess of £12m. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics from Newcastle University and is a Chartered Management Accountant.

Rick regularly mentors aspiring entrepreneurs, through his involvement in programmes such as Ignite and SparkTank (part of Northumbria University’s Msc in Entrepreneurship). He was also seconded to the Sirius Programme in 2015, to help deliver the North East programme. Sirius is run by UK Trade and Investment to help international graduates with high growth business ideas set up in the UK. Rick was responsible for mentoring the teams whilst challenging them on their strategy and delivering weekly workshops on various start-up topics.

Rick is interested in the future of the workforce and the impact of machine learning on workplace developments.

Caitlin May

As a programme investor, Caitlin works with delivery partners to identify scalable, innovative start-ups who would benefit from the investment and support accelerator programmes have to offer. Caitlin completes the investments and managing them through investment and portfolio phase.

Within this role, Caitlin works as a mentor and advisor to start-up companies taking part.

Caitlin Joined Northstar in 2012 and is currently an exam-qualified CIMA Accountant.

Caitlin is also a member of the finance team supporting the Finance Manager and Finance Director in ensuring the smooth running of the finance function of Northstar Ventures.
