ReThinkX is pleased to present our third event of the 2017-18 academic year. In partnership with the MCR Global Health Society, we are revisiting an issue that threatens every person on the planet, and transcends cultural and socioeconomic boundaries: Antibiotic Resistance.

Over the last century, humankind has gone from haphazardly discovering penicillin, to a world-wide dependence on antibiotics to combat infections. 200 years ago, a simple skin or tooth infection could have been fatal for healthy or vulnerable people alike. Now, through the tireless and expensive development of new drugs, we are able to fight even the most severe and hard to reach afflictions, often with a simple pill, cream, or infusion.

However, an over-willingness to prescribe and misuse these drugs has unfortunate consequences. Many bacteria have now evolved immunity to a vast range of antibiotics and an ability to bypass our defences which is outpacing the development of new ones.

In this important debate we ask - Could we be entering a post-antibiotics age?
